Clarendelle Amberwine

The character and subtle structure of Clarendelle Amberwine comes from the combination of two types of grape maturation, Botrytis Cinerea (the grapes develop noble rot as in Sauternes) and late harvest. Amberwine takes its name from the magnificent “amber” colour that it takes on as it ages. Amberwine is a blend of Semillon and Muscadelle grapes. This charming, accessible and modern wine is distinguished by its freshness and its intrinsic balance of floral fruit and acidity.

Tasting notes

Brilliant golden-yellow colour. The nose is intense and complex, revealing aromas of candied fruit, honey and vanilla. The palate is remarkably fresh, full-bodied and sweet, culminating in long-lasting honeyed and candied notes on the finish. Aromas of peach and apricot follow through, mingled with nuances of white flowers (acacia). All in all, a lively and very rich wine, underpinned by a silky texture and a long-lasting and very fruity finish with hints of quince. This 2022 vintage has wonderful ageing potential.

Climate

Everything started with a mild, dry winter, leading to an early bud-break. There were a few worrying spring frosts, but they were kept under control and caused little damage, and the rest of the season was mild and damp, with no disease pressure. Flowering went very well and was completed very quickly, under hot, dry conditions. The vines were very healthy and the grapes set well, opening up the prospect of a very good vintage. The plentiful water reserves from 2021 and the Mediterranean origin of grapevines enabled them to resist the very hot, dry summer weather. Two storms in August stimulated the final ripening of the grapes. Despite these conditions, all the wines are good, richly-coloured, and fruity, and most of them are outstanding. The only downside is that we do not have more of them!
