The
winter of 2001-2002 was colder
than in previous year and much
dryer (rainfall of -255 vs.
the average of 556 mm).
The spring, was dryer too (-68mm
vs. the average 1992-2001) with
warmer temperatures (+1°c
vs. the average temperature).
In contrast, the cool and humid
early June weather gave birth
to the coulure (non-fertilization,
thus an absence of berries)
and the millerandange (the fruit
is present but does not develop).
In the summer, the véraison
was slow and spread over several
weeks, helping the synthesis
of anthocyanes (the chemical
that gives red wines their colour)
in the skins.
This slightly cool summer delayed
ripening, but conditions became
ideal for harvesting.
The harvest of Merlot on September
19th and of Cabernet Sauvignon
on September 30th. From early
September to early October,
the weather was dry and sunny.
Cool nights were followed by
beautiful sunny days, with a
light easterly wind. |
